What differentiates leaders? Their internal 'action logic' (how to act in a particular situation/context).There are 7 different types of leader:
- Diplomat- wins any way possible. Good in emergencies and in sale opportunities (5%)
- Opportunist- avoids overt conflict. Good as supporting glue in organisations (12%)
- Expert- rules by logic and expertise. Good as an individual contributor (38%)
- Achiever- meets strategic goals. Well-suited to managerial roles. (30%)
- Individualist- interweaves competing personal and company action logics. Effective in venture and consulting roles. (10%)
- Strategist- generates personal and organisational transformations. Effective as transformational leader (4%)
- Alchemist- generates social transformations. Good at leading society-wide transformations (1%)
[They see these as a progression rather than a palette from which one draws according to task and context. They say that the hardest transition to make is from that of expert to achiever. Often people are promoted to leadership because they are an expert, but that doesn't necessarily equip them with the skills to lead. The strategist and alchemist move beyond personal skill development towards exploring the disciplines and strategies required to build good teams and organisations.
